Understanding DSE
A DSE assessment is a structured assessment of a person's workstation and work tasks involving Display Screen Equipment (for example desktop computers, laptops, tablets) to identify risk factors for musculoskeletal symptoms and visual fatigue, and to specify practical controls.
These controls include workstation set-up, equipment adjustments, and work organisation — all designed to reduce risk and improve comfort for the individual.
In most workplaces, yes — your employer must ensure that a DSE assessment is carried out where you are a "DSE user" (that is, you use screen equipment as a significant part of your normal work). Under law, employers must analyse workstations, take account of the minimum requirements and implement controls where risks are identified.
Covers desktops, laptops, tablets and associated equipment
Identifies risk factors for musculoskeletal symptoms and visual fatigue
Health benefits that are most consistently reported from DSE assessments.
Commonly neck, shoulder, upper limb and low back pain — when workstation adjustments are combined with user training and, where appropriate, targeted exercise.
Sustained awkward postures, long reach, poor screen and keyboard positioning — corrected through set-up changes aligned with regulatory requirements.
Reduced presenteeism and productivity loss in programmes that include an individualised ergonomics component, often with exercise.
Better management of fatigue and discomfort via breaks and task variation, tailored to individual needs.
A DSE assessment cannot guarantee that you will not develop pain, because musculoskeletal symptoms are multifactorial (for example total screen time, workload, stress, sleep, physical conditioning, previous injury, and non-work activities). However, it can reduce your risk by identifying and correcting modifiable workstation and work-organisation factors.
Multi-component approaches — ergonomic assessment plus training and, where relevant, strengthening exercise — show better outcomes for neck pain in office workers than ergonomics alone.
What it can do
Reduce exposure to clear physical risk factors — poor monitor height, excessive reach, unsupported sitting, glare.
Action plan
Provide an action plan that, when implemented, often reduces the likelihood of symptoms worsening and improves day-to-day comfort.
Duration
Remote assessment takes approximately 30 minutes. In-person assessments may take longer.
Technology
For remote assessments MS Teams is used. Candidates do not require MS Teams on their system as they can connect through a browser link.
Requirements
Candidate must have working audio and visual with blur-free camera set. If candidates do not have connectivity, the assessment will be aborted after 8 minutes. Full fee will be applied.
Cancellations
No shows or cancellations within 24 hours are charged at full rate. Cancellations between 5 and 24 hours are charged at 40% of the fee.
Common questions about DSE assessments and workplace regulations.
A DSE assessment is a structured assessment of a person's workstation and work tasks involving Display Screen Equipment (for example desktop computers, laptops, tablets) to identify risk factors for musculoskeletal symptoms and visual fatigue, and to specify practical controls (workstation set-up, equipment adjustments, and work organisation).
In most workplaces, yes — your employer must ensure that a DSE (workstation) assessment is carried out where you are a "DSE user" (that is, you use screen equipment as a significant part of your normal work). Under law, employers must analyse workstations, take account of the minimum requirements and implement controls where risks are identified.
Health benefits that are most consistently reported include: reduced musculoskeletal discomfort and pain (commonly neck, shoulder, upper limb and low back) when workstation adjustments are combined with user training and, where appropriate, targeted exercise; reduced exposure to recognised physical risk factors through set-up changes aligned with regulatory minimum requirements; reduced impact of symptoms on work functioning (for example reduced presenteeism and productivity loss) in programmes that include an individualised ergonomics component; and improved management of fatigue and discomfort via breaks and task variation.
Multi-component approaches (ergonomic assessment plus training and exercise) show better outcomes than ergonomics alone. A well-conducted assessment will reduce exposure to clear physical risk factors and provide an action plan that, when implemented, often reduces the likelihood of symptoms worsening.
Remote assessments take approximately 30 minutes. In-person assessments may take longer depending on the workstation setup and any specific issues identified. For remote assessments, MS Teams is used — candidates do not require MS Teams installed on their system as they can connect through a browser link.
DSE assessments should be conducted when an employee starts using DSE, when workstation equipment changes significantly, when employees report discomfort or symptoms, or at least every 2-3 years as a general review. Many employers opt for annual reviews to maintain compliance and employee wellbeing.
Our qualified assessors travel nationwide to conduct professional on-site DSE assessments. We also offer remote assessment options for distributed teams.
