An ergonomic assessment is a clinically-led evaluation of how a person's work, workstation and environment combine to produce musculoskeletal risk. It is deeper than a routine DSE assessment — used for reported pain, injury, return-to-work, or high-risk roles. Usafety delivers ergonomic assessments as a two-stage engagement: a Stage 1 consultation followed by a Stage 2 onsite assessment and a detailed report. We are the official supplier of specialist ergonomic assessments to the HSE under Lot 8 of the public-sector framework, led by our specialist ergonomics team.

How it works

A two-stage process

Most ergonomic issues have a clinical dimension a quick checklist won't catch. Our two-stage process is built to find it.

01

Stage 1 — Consultation

A telephone or virtual consultation, delivered by our senior ergonomist, to understand the role, the symptoms or clinical context, the work environment and the equipment in use.

02

Stage 2 — Onsite assessment

The ergonomist visits the workplace, observes the employee performing their actual work, takes measurements and notes, and identifies specific risks and controls.

03

Report & sign-off

A detailed report follows with specific corrective actions and equipment recommendations, reviewed with you and finalised for sign-off.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is an ergonomic assessment?

An ergonomic assessment is a structured evaluation by a qualified ergonomist of how a person's work, workstation, equipment and environment combine to produce musculoskeletal and visual risk. It is deeper than a routine DSE assessment — typically prompted by reported pain, injury, return-to-work, or a high-risk role. In Ireland it is usually delivered as a two-stage engagement: a Stage 1 telephone/virtual consultation followed by a Stage 2 onsite assessment, then a detailed report with corrective actions.

How is an ergonomic assessment different from a DSE assessment?

A DSE assessment is a 30–45 minute workstation check required under SI 299/2007, focused on the screen-based workstation. An ergonomic assessment is the deeper, clinically-led version — delivered by a chartered ergonomist (an IES member in Ireland) for higher-risk individuals, reported symptoms, return-to-work cases, or non-screen work like clinical, laboratory or production roles.

Who delivers the assessment?

Usafety ergonomic assessments are overseen by our senior ergonomist, an IES member and the Specialist Healthcare Ergonomist to the HSE. Our specialist team delivers Stage 1 (the telephone or virtual consultation) on framework engagements. Stage 2 onsite assessments are carried out by an assigned assessor with the appropriate clinical background.

Are you on the HSE framework for ergonomic assessments?

Yes. Usafety is the official supplier of specialist ergonomic assessments to the HSE under Lot 8 of the public-sector Framework for Health and Safety Consultancy and Training. HSE and public bodies can draw down directly. We also serve private employers on a direct-engagement basis.

How long does an ergonomic assessment take?

The Stage 1 telephone or virtual consultation typically takes 45–60 minutes. The Stage 2 onsite assessment typically takes 1.5–2.5 hours depending on complexity. A detailed report follows within an agreed period (often 5–10 working days), is reviewed with you, and finalised for sign-off.

When should we commission an ergonomic assessment?

When an employee reports persistent musculoskeletal pain, returns to work after injury, has a clinical reason for a tailored setup, works in a role with significant non-screen ergonomic risk, or where a DSE assessment recommended further specialist review.
